A Trendsetting Fusion of High Design, Modern Art & Industrial Grit
Located northwest of Downtown Dallas between Interstate 35E and the Trinity River meanders, the Dallas Design District is one of the most dynamic and sophisticated post-industrial neighborhoods in Texas. Originally established as a mid-century wholesale interior design and architectural supply enclave, the district has transformed into an internationally recognized hub for contemporary art galleries, luxury antique showrooms, high-energy dining, and craft breweries.
The neighborhood’s defining charm lies in its mid-century modern industrial warehouse architecture. Low-slung red brick facades, loading docks, and soaring factory windows have been preserved and re-imagined as progressive art spaces like Dallas Contemporary, avant-garde interior showrooms, and stylish residential lofts.
Centered along Dragon Street and Oak Lawn Avenue, the Design District balances trade-only interior prestige with accessible public street vitality: weekend gallery walks, craft beer taprooms like Peticolas, and over-the-top culinary spectacles like Town Hearth, complete with 64 vintage chandeliers.

From Trinity River Floodplain to International Design Capital
Until the late 1920s, the land where the Design District sits was an uninhabitable Trinity River floodplain subject to catastrophic seasonal inundation. Following the monumental construction of the Trinity River Levee system in 1928–1931, the reclaimed land was designated for light industrial manufacturing.
In the 1940s and 1950s, visionary developer Trammell Crow transformed the district into a master-planned wholesale furniture, textile, and decorative arts capital. For decades, the district was strictly 'to-the-trade only', closed to the general public and accessible exclusively to licensed interior designers and architects.
In the early 2000s, progressive rezoning opened the district to the public. Art gallerists took advantage of the spacious, high-ceiling warehouse spaces on Dragon Street, quickly followed by pioneering restaurateurs, craft brewers, and luxury loft developers who established the thriving cultural hub enjoyed today.
